Into the teeth of the dragon!
June 30, 2008We are here at Port Edgar. arrived late last night after four hours in the teeth of a forch 8 with gusts of 9. Unable to find shelter we had to battle with it – not funny even now! But the dragon did as dragons usually do let us go just as we arrived at the Forth Bridge and the winds dropped to a 5/6 – a calm compared to the last few hours! Still totally shattered but will fill in details later.

June 29, 2008Another very lively day though we did manage to sail with the cruising chute for 2 hours before the wind became too strong to handle it – heeling at 30 degrees is not my idea of fun! The round Britain power boat race started from Edingburgh about midday and we were then being zapped both sides for a while by very fast boats and at one stage as helicopter. The Farne Islands were as beautiful as always with their vast colonies of breeding seabirds.
The sea was slight to moderate all the way but unusually we diod not get rained on but spray coming over the side made up for the lack of rain – restr assured we were still wet!! Whie cat napping below the contents of the crockery cupboard landed at my feet proving beyond doubt that I had forgotten to lock the catch!
Late afternoon we made our way into the lovely little fishing harbour of Eyemouth – a lovely pearl once one found the way to the harbour entrance through the rocks! A very busy trawler harbour guarded by about a dozen seals that took every liberty out!! Little Cloe raised anxieties by developing a high temperature and tummy upset so the Harbour master took them to the local hospital where she was cleared to continue the trip to Edinburgh.
A decent night’s sleep was achieved before setting off on our last leg to Edinburgh.

June 28, 2008Remember those lobster pots….. yes we caught one yesterday and dragged it over a mile before shaking ourselves free. We seemed to catch something on the rudder so we are hoping that we have not damaged the prop. We will be back on the scrubbing dock on our return to check for damage!! The run from Whitby to Blyth was another 14 hours that ended the usual way — cold, soaked and shattered. A minky whale was spotted playing off Seaham. We watched a gannet feeding frenzy where they all dived into the water in unison for a tasty morsel. The wind had stayed in the W/SW quarter 4/5 but gusts of 6+ continue to mess with us.
Blyth harbour was very busy as they are hosting the East Coast boat festival. Rain or no rain it took no time to change and gate crash the party and ‘hog roast’. Our trip was put out over the tannoy and our collecting bucket on leaving Blyth was very health thanks to the wonderful generosity of everyone we spoke to.
Another early start today 4am! Winds seem lighter today so maybe the new cruising chute (bargain on ebay!) will fly. Will return later!
Well it’s a good job someone’s paying attention!
